My View on Dr. Caligari

 When I first found out, we were going to watch Dr. Caligari in class, I was not excited because old movies have never been an interest of mine. As I was watching the film, it stood out to me just how much color in films has changed so much as time has progressed. In Dr. Caligari, I find it interesting how it was a silence film, and they had dialogue pop up on the screen throughout the film. In films today, it is completely dialogue, and you do not really see a lot of silence movies ever. Honestly, Dr. Caligari is one of the first completely silence films I have ever seen. I think it is super interesting just how much films have really changed from 1920 when this movie was filmed until now. 

Something that I did not like about the film Dr. Caligari was the music in the background. It was a jazz type of song, but it sounded really dark and creepy. It gave me a feeling of suspense as I watched the film, which was interesting because I felt like the plot of the film did not really match the song they played throughout the film. One piece of music sounded like a creepy song that they would play with the circus that actually did go with the plot. Another thing that stood out to me about the music in this film was that the music was instrumental, which means there was no words. In films today, we tend to hear songs with the words as part of the film. An example of a film today that has music with words is my favorite film Mamma Mia, which features one of my favorite songs "Dancing Queen". 

I think it was very interesting that we started the class with Dr. Caligari as our first film because we get to see how older films were first developed. It is really crazy to me just how much movies have developed over time. I found some interest in this film because never having seen a silence film, I did not know what to expect, but it is quite different than a film that someone would watch today. I am quite excited to keep watching different films in this class because I think it will be really interesting to watch different genres, but also to continue to see the development of film over time. I cannot wait to see what film we watch next in class!

    Old films have ever been an interest of mine either, so I know the feeling. However, my roommate is a film minor and said she loved this film, so I was a little excited. It took a while for me to get used to the no dialogue, but after a while, I learned the beauty of silent films and how they can relate a story across to the audience without the use of words.

The Horrors of Get Out

 This week for class we were to watch the horror film, Get Out. I was nervous about watching it because I do not like scary movies at all. I thought that Get Out was a good movie. When watching Get Out, there was so much suspense throughout the film, that I was on the edge of my seat. It starts out slowly, but as things unfold it builds up, which I liked and thought was interesting. One thing that I liked about this film was the shocking things that you did not expect to happen.  One element of the film that I thought that Peele really did well was the music. He chose songs that really set the mysterious element throughout the course of the film. Something that Peele did with the music that I thought was cool was he used the same song in the beginning of the film and at the end of the film. I think he did this because he wanted to tie the whole movie together, which I thought was great. The music helps shifts in the storyline, which helps add to the overall plot of the movie....

Lost in Translation - Week 7

 This week we were assigned to watch Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation. I thought it was an interesting movie that had a slow build to it. It was hard for me to get into at first, but as things started to build up with the main characters, I found myself getting more interested in the film. Coppola did an excellent job directing and I think she picked a great cast for this film. One of my favorite parts of the film was that it was shot in Japan, so that was something unique that I have never seen before. I have never seen a film written by Sofia Coppola, so it was interesting to see how her style of film compares to other film directors' styles of film. I think that it was cool to see Bill Murray play such a different role than we saw him play in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The film portrays Murray as this movie star that travels to Japan to do a whiskey commerical. He seems like this lonely guy, just lost because he not only is he all alone but he does not understand...

Finishing The Fascination Project

 This week in class we continued working in our groups on our films. On Monday, we did not have class because we were to work on our project. My group met this day to find a new location because our original location was not going to work out because there was always a class in the spot where we wanted to film. We decided to try Merner and it actually worked for us. I feel like it made our film even better because of some of the different spots in Merner helped added that mysterious vibe we wanted for our film. We ended up getting our entire movie filmed, so that was great.  Then, we went into Wednesday's class with our clips taped, but we still had to edit our film together. In class, we learned how to use Adobe Express, which is a pretty easy editing tool to use. Something that we went over was how audio and video are on different tracks when we are editing them.
