Final Blog Post

My first film that I really liked that we watched in class this semester was Rear Window. I liked this film because of the mysterious vibe that it created. Something that I still was amazed by with this particular film was the use of the window because it created a different perspective to the characters' lives. This is a typically not a film that I would watch but I am glad I did because I really did enjoy watching it in class. The second film that I thought was good was Get Out. I had never seen it before, so I was excited to see it when I heard it was more of a horror film. I thought that Jordan Peele did such an amazing job creating that horror with his music choices, and his twists and turns throughout the course of the film. I will definitely have to explore more Jordan Peele movies because of how much I liked the style of this film.

Something that I discovered about myself is when I used to watch films, I only had my interpretation of what a film was about but hearing my other classmates opinions makes me realize that everyone interprets films in a different way. I used to watch a film, then say if I enjoyed it or not but something I realize by being in this class was when we had meaningful discussions with my other classmates, it allowed me to share my thoughts on what I thought of the movie and allow others to bring up points that maybe I had never thought of before. I liked doing the Fascination Project because it showed me just how much work goes into making a film because I believe that is probably something most of us do not realize. This project helped me to explore the different genres of film and it allowed my group to use our creativity to create something that we are proud of. The last thing is I really did not know a lot about was the technical terms about film but throughout the course of this class, I learned how to apply them to the films as we watched and discussed them.

I had a hard time remembering what films I had watched during the pandemic, so I had to go back online to see what came out during 2020. The first film that I remember seeing during the course of the pandemic was Holidate and it was directed by John Whitesell. It stars Emma Roberts and it is a romantic type of film but with comedy incorporated as well. It is about two strangers who hate being single on the holidays, agree to be each other dates for every holiday all year long, but along the way you see them start to fall in love. It was a cute movie and the director did a fantastic job with the storyline. This is just one film that I viewed during the pandemic but I definitely watched more including some films that I had seen before but are still some of my favorites. One of my favorite films that I had already seen before but I rewatched during the pandemic was Clueless. My sister and I love this movie so we were able to watch it together since that was her first time watching it. During the pandemic, my siblings and I would spend time watching different films together since we were stuck inside and we did not have much that we could do.

I can not really think of any recommendations for movies that should be shown next semester. Something I would suggest in general is maybe more of a comedic film because I feel like many students might enjoy a good laugh as they are watching the film. One thing that I liked was how we did a range of genres of films, so I definitely think that is important to incorporate into next semester as well. Another type of film that I think next semester's class would enjoy is action movies because I feel like a lot of people like action films so that might be a possibility to consider when selecting films to view next semester.

Thank you for teaching me so much about film!

The Horrors of Get Out

This week for class we were to watch the horror film, Get Out. I was nervous about watching it because I do not like scary movies at all. I thought that Get Out was a good movie. When watching Get Out, there was so much suspense throughout the film, that I was on the edge of my seat. It starts out slowly, but as things unfold it builds up, which I liked and thought was interesting. One thing that I liked about this film was the shocking things that you did not expect to happen.  One element of the film that I thought that Peele really did well was the music. He chose songs that really set the mysterious element throughout the course of the film. Something that Peele did with the music that I thought was cool was he used the same song in the beginning of the film and at the end of the film. I think he did this because he wanted to tie the whole movie together, which I thought was great. The music helps shifts in the storyline, which helps add to the overall plot of the movie....

Lost in Translation - Week 7

This week we were assigned to watch Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation. I thought it was an interesting movie that had a slow build to it. It was hard for me to get into at first, but as things started to build up with the main characters, I found myself getting more interested in the film. Coppola did an excellent job directing and I think she picked a great cast for this film. One of my favorite parts of the film was that it was shot in Japan, so that was something unique that I have never seen before. I have never seen a film written by Sofia Coppola, so it was interesting to see how her style of film compares to other film directors' styles of film. I think that it was cool to see Bill Murray play such a different role than we saw him play in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The film portrays Murray as this movie star that travels to Japan to do a whiskey commerical. He seems like this lonely guy, just lost because he not only is he all alone but he does not understand...

Finishing The Fascination Project

This week in class we continued working in our groups on our films. On Monday, we did not have class because we were to work on our project. My group met this day to find a new location because our original location was not going to work out because there was always a class in the spot where we wanted to film. We decided to try Merner and it actually worked for us. I feel like it made our film even better because of some of the different spots in Merner helped added that mysterious vibe we wanted for our film. We ended up getting our entire movie filmed, so that was great.  Then, we went into Wednesday's class with our clips taped, but we still had to edit our film together. In class, we learned how to use Adobe Express, which is a pretty easy editing tool to use. Something that we went over was how audio and video are on different tracks when we are editing them. We worked on putting our clips that we shot into Adobe Express. My group struggled a little bit with how to inser...
